Don:

If the person who called about getting a birth certificate said Charly was born
on Molokai and not in Honolulu, that may explain why the Dept of Health had no
record. One thing I have learned about Hawaii--they do not play well with
others and don't necessarily follow the same basic procedures. Honestly, I'm
surprised whoever called even got them to check over the phone. Based on my
experience, when it comes to getting records if you don't have the CORRECT
information shown on the document you will rarely get a copy of it. It is
highly possible there was no record on Molokai for your ancestor because it
actually exists for Oahu. Basically, they could have had all of the
information correct except the place of birth and would have been told no
record, even though all of that same info brought up a record for a person in
Honolulu. The reality is that the printed documents we can get through them
will usually just list generalized location (Portugal, Maui, Oahu, etc) if at
all. It was the original "Territory of Hawaii" version that usually went into
great detail (from the ones I've seen anyway). But if we had that we wouldn't
be looking, right? As Rosemarie suggested church records are often more
detailed and easier to obtain. However, you still have to be looking in the
right area.

As an example: we had an adventure getting my mother-in-law's birth
certificate and we were standing there in person (records for all islands are
obtained in Honolulu). She was hanai--a legal Hawaiian adoption at the time
but unofficial on paper. Even with her date and place of birth (a very small
town on Maui--census done 3 months before her birth shows all of 100 people
living in it) , given name, and biological mother's first name (MIL knew that
much) they told us there was no record. After much talking, pleading, and
producing hubbies birth certificate and his parents marriage certificate (ie:
purchasing another as the ones we had were back on the mainland), they finally
gave us her birth certificate. For the record, her middle and surname were
listed differently on all three records--only her given stayed the same. Not
like they could follow on paper it was the same person, so why???? Our only
guess that they are so picky is too many people are trying to be "royal"
hawaiian. Perhaps they have done this out of necessity. Imaging & online
access of census and other records is great for those of us trying to find
family but too easy for less than honorable folks trying to create false ties.
Probably off the mark but as good a theory as any.

Hopefully I've been able to share a little knowledge to assist you, even though
probably not truly helpful in getting your information.

Teresa Phillips
