It all results from the decision (or whim) of the anonymous
NAQDANIYM, the punctuators of the Hebrew bible, to place a segol
under the letter waw of צלמות so as to make it sound CALMAWET,
being possibly motivated by the GEY HA-HAREG-AH and GEY BEN-HINOM of
Jer. 7:32. But it could have been CALMUT or CALMOT, both having
nothing to do, not with צל CEL, 'shadow', and not with מות MAWET,
'death'.
