if the external IP address changes, then the router is pulling down the connection to BT.
If it recovers in half a second or less, then it's probably just at PPP level. If it takes a few seconds to come back, then it's going to be at ASDL level. Three possible solutions: - re flash the router to the most recent software version; - get a fixed IP address from BT (bit pricey mind) - get a more reliable brand of router; A 'line fault' wouldn't effect the box in the way you describe. 2008/5/13 Jonathan Chetwynd <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > both are the same now, os x > > whatismyip changes, btrouter default set to dhcp, > > the connection seems not to go down, ie chat, web and email continue, just > obviously the pages are no longer served from the same address... > seem to have to reset router to get the whole shebang working properly > again... > tried variations of rebooting individual machines, but this seems not to > be sufficient... > > cheers > > ~:" > > previously on an asus, had been using manual, but that was quite some time > ago. > <http://www.openicon.org> > > Jonathan Chetwynd > > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > http://www.openicon.org/ > > +44 (0) 20 7978 1764 > > On 13 May 2008, at 16:28, Brian Butterworth wrote: > > Does both your local and remote IP address change? > > http://www.whatismyip.com/ - for remote > > do a IPCONFIG (I'm presuming Windows here). > > Do they both change? > > 2008/5/13 Jonathan Chetwynd <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>: > > > Brian, > > I am not disconnecting at the adsl level, merely closing iPlayer. > > however it is the case that this is part of a wireless network. > > however why would that have an effect? > > > > cheers > > > > ~:" > > <http://www.openicon.org> > > > > Jonathan Chetwynd > > > > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > http://www.openicon.org/ > > > > +44 (0) 20 7978 1764 > > > > On 13 May 2008, at 15:43, Brian Butterworth wrote: > > > > Another option is if you are using wireless it is that address that is > > being reallocated if you disconnect. > > > > BT's boxes do not usually change IP unless you disconnect and reconnect > > at the ADSL level.
