if the external IP address changes, then the router is pulling down the
connection to BT.

If it recovers in half a second or less, then it's probably just at PPP
level.

If it takes a few seconds to come back, then it's going to be at ASDL level.

Three possible solutions:

- re flash the router to the most recent software version;

- get a fixed IP address from BT (bit pricey mind)

- get a more reliable brand of router;

A 'line fault' wouldn't effect the box in the way you describe.
