When these people say 'doesn't work with Mac/Linux', they mean that the auto-install control software on the dongle doesn't work there. My 3 (Huawei) dongle, for example, works better under Linux than it does under Windows - but you have to mangle the settings yourself (trivial under Ubuntu) and you don't get 3's fancy client. Bonus!
Dunno about Mac, though, but almost certainly the same. It's just a modem, after all.
