The problem is likely your disk configuration on your backup host. 1) Don't use master/slave on a single IDE controller (which typically shows as hda and hdb). Use each drive as a master on its own IDE controller (one disk per cable). Buy another IDE controller card if you have to. Your CDROM should also be separate from the disks. 2) Use hdparm to tune your disks. Make sure DMA is on and the unmask IRQ flag is on.
