Windows firewalling is a recent addition by Microsoft. If you control 
the LAN, configure the DHCP server to always hand out the same IP 
address to each machine based on the MAC address, then put the machines 
in DNS so you don't have a problem discovering them.  You still need to 
open the firewall to ping and file sharing or rsync, though.
