I just found this interesting Linux Magazine article on Network Block 
Devices, could possibly be relevant (note: this PDF only worked for me 
with Acrobat, not sure why Document Viewer on Ubuntu Gutsy couldn't make 
sense of it).  DNBD looks interesting, but haven't read all the details, 
might be "read mostly".

Other thoughts:

use XFS and use xfs_copy to "clone" the filesystem to a 2nd device
RAID-1 over ATA over Ethernet (AoE)
cluster filesystem like GFS / Lustre / Gluster / ZFS
