I think I initially tried that and rpm/yum did something wierd at the next upgrade, like converting the links to the directory in the package. Or maybe it was an selinux issue. Also, "rpm -V" (verify package) reports bad entries for those two directories if replaced with symlinks, cluttering the report on whether the system has been attacked.
