I wonder if you install the (read-only) FUSE filesystem 'backuppcfs'
it will help you to diagnose this further? As you seem to be having
trouble with a small number of large files it shouldn't be difficult
to isolate the problem areas and maybe post some details here.
After version 4 of BackupPC was released there was a corresponding
update to backuppcfs. If you do use it make sure you get the right
one. You should be able to find it in the list archives.
