OK, many thanks.  From the "ps fax" in the previous run, I can see that the 
Director died not the console (I guess I should make the console report 
dropped lines better ...).   So I was going to ask you to run the Dir under 
the debugger.  I guess Fedora 8 has more security code or something 
preventing a core dump.  Anyway, your run under Fedora 7 shows me where it is 
dying.  Now I just need to spend a bit of time to look at the code to see if 
I can figure out exactly why ...

I'll be back to you in a bit (probably before you are awake anyway ...).
