Contributing to bacula is not easy because it is a complex software. Yes, you need really good idea to be accepted and you need to insist if you're 100% sure it is a good idea. Try to put yourself in Kern's position. There are many guys around who think they have a good idea, but they don't think about all the consequences in implementing it. Kern doesn't have the time to explain from ground how bacula works, maybe that's why sometimes his answers sound a little bit raw ;-) I know what i am talking about, a year ago i had to convince Kern about a CopyDiskToTape performance problem. For me the problem was clear from the beginning, but it took some time (emails, debug reports,...) to be accepted.
