Hello,

I am a first-time user setting up Bacula 5.0.3.
So far Bacula is outstanding and brilliant in
every regard, but I've come across a point where
perhaps a useful adjustment could be made.

The backup server under construction will take
full backups every six months with an age-out
after 18 months. It's for a set of ten
development systems, and I'm trying to mimic my
manual approach of taking rare snapshots and then
tracking file changes during the intervals.
Configuring no differentials, just daily
incrementals. Want everything to fit on a
mirrored pair of 3TB disks where a third drive
will occasionally be swapped for a mirror leg and
rotated off-site.

I've hit a snag, which is that if the FileSet list
is modified, a full backup is forced. This will
eat significant disk space in the envisioned
setup. Since its running in "Accurate" mode, it
seems to me that there is no need to force a full
backup when the FileSet is changed. Correct me if
I'm wrong, but Accurate backup mode operates
essentially as a set subtraction operation from
the set of all previous incremental and
differential backups back to the last full backup
and the current set of files. So if for example,
the FileSet is tweaked by adding an exception for
a new directory, the difference in the before and
after sets is minor and Accurate mode should have
no trouble maintaining continuity through the
change. Even if one made a radical FileSet
modification, it would still work and I can see
how allowing this could a useful as well.

The forced-to-full backup condition makes perfect
sense when Accurate backup mode is disabled, so my
suggestion is to allow FileSet changes to not
force a full backup only when Accurate mode is
present in entire the backup set for a target
system.

Hope this idea makes sense and is deemed worthy of
attention.

Thank you for the wonderful software.

Regards
