Can you tell what language somebody is speaking just by watching the
shapes their lips make? A computer developed at the University of
East Anglia in Norwich in the UK can, and it could lead to automatic
lip-reading and translation systems for deaf people.
Linguists have long suspected that our sequences of lip shapes and
lip motions vary strongly with the language we speak, but nobody had
put it to the test.
