I've also never owned slaves nor did any of my ancestors so far as I know.
But I recognize I belong to a class of people responsible for this
oppression and therefore have a responsibility to combat its continuing
effects.

No, That's the whole point. Classes of people aren't responsible for the actions of just a few of their members in their past. But if white people in the U.S. or the West have any special responsibility it isn't because their ancestors may have owned slaves. It is because they live in a society which *continues* to be racist and which they *continue* to benefit from due to white privilege.
