Normally marriages were not consummated until after puberty and I've
not heard anyone suggest this was not the case with Muhammad. Still, I
don't think Aisha was as young as some hadiths suggest. As Stephen
points out, the chronology doesn't match. I think a young age began to
be ascribed to Aisha in order to make her better competition to Fatima
as the Prophet's young darling.

Maimonides held that 3 was the permissible marriage age.
