Often she or he simply loses faith. I have seen it happen. Most former fundamentalists I have met are now atheists, not liberal Christians.

How mournful, how sad. Having been disappointed by fools gold they stop seeking gold. Maybe their expectations of the Bible count for them as what Baha'u'llah called (in The Book of Certitude) 'the obscuring dust of acquired knowledge'.
