What a shame. The dispute over the construction of
the gas and steam power plant located in the village
of Pemaron is still dragging on. The local people
along with several elements such as Indonesian Hotel
and Restaurant Association, Non � Government
Organization are strongly opposing such the
construction. They argue that the area has been
adopted as a tourist development designated area and
such the construction is clearly breach the
regulation. The Head of Local Government of Buleleng,
Bupati Buleleng, Putu Bagiada, boldly approved the
project by ignoring the strong protest. Even the
Bupati has gone so far by officially officiate the
laying stone of the project despite the fact that the
project is not legally licensed.
During the laying stone ceremony the local people
of the area demonstrated against the project. The
demonstrators said that the project would ruin the
environment and eventually would ruin the tourism of
the area. They demand that the project must be built
in the industrial designated area. The protest was
ignored by the Bupati. Out of the blue, other
demonstrators just showed up. They claimed to be the
supporters of Bupati. Most of them were bare chest and
yelling challenging the opposing demonstrators.
Fortunately, physical clash could be avoided.
Those who are opposing the project decided to
bring the case to the court. The case then was brought
to the State Administrative Court ( PTUN ). They
demanded that the court should verdict that the permit
issued by the Bupati is unlawful and therefore is null
and void. Again out of expectation, the complex of
PTUN was filled with the supporters of Bupati.
Bupati is supposed to be a leader who must tries
his best to unite his people to be a strong force to
develop his region for the welfare of his own people.
In fact, everything is upside down. The people of
Buleleng has disintegrated, fragmented, one group face
the other. What a shame.
