I have it from the Commissioner himself that the swine who abducted my wife
was a Spanish agent with an uncanny resemblance to Major de Toilette. He
died at Major de Toilette's own hand and, by certain marks on the corps
which were absent from the Major, it was proven conclusively that Major de
Toilette was completely innocent of any wrong doing.
This story, amazing though it may seem, was confirmed by Brigadier de
Success when he brought the Heavies (including Major de Toilette) to the
front this month and, indeed, I believe there is some investigation afoot
regarding what damage, if any, the doppelganger might have caused wihilst
impersonating the major in the course of his regimental duties.
Since you were in Paris during the whole course of this bizarre tale I am
amazed that you appear to be ignorant of it? Surely such strange
circumstances, beloved by playwrights, would have set parisian tongues
wagging from the highest to the very lowest? Does your butler never aquaint
you with what is being said on streets? I find my own provides me with much
information of use to me even in the highest circles.
In short, far from being the honourable to course to call out Major de
Toilette, since he was guilty of no slight to me and mine and was the
nemesis of he that was, doing so would appear to be ungrateful in the
extreme. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to the late blackguard who
occasioned such distress to my wife does not seem sufficient cause to call
out Major de Toilette. Of course, if you are in possession of any pertinent
information to the contrary which, being a the front the whole time I have
been unable to discover, I would be most eager to hear of it.
