I am surprised at your credulity. Indeed, I am in Paris, and here I have
learned that the Commissioner of Public Safety has decided to accept the
improbable version of events put forth by de Toilette, but the consensus is
that this is only because he feels this is a matter which is best handled
privately, rather than by the government. Where de Toilette may have
secured this poor double, to be put to death in an attempt to hide his
guilt, is of no matter. I, and all I speak with, recognize that the facts
of the matter are unchanged. Should you decline to defend your honor in
this matter, I shall lose all respect for you.
