It would not be difficult to take exception to your tone regards your
'credulity' jibes, Sir. I have been at the front for two months now and look
set to stay here for a further three. All I have to go on are letters from
Paris (including those from His Eminence and His Excellency the
Commissioner) and the news recently brought by the members of the Heavy
Brigade. Without exeption they have confirmed the account I originally
received from the Commissioner - until yours arrived.
Naturally, I have read yours most carefully. You talk of 'consensus', yet
name no names. I need _facts_ Sir, not opinion. Brace the Commissioner and
get to the bottom of this affair. Secretly trap de Toilette into confessing
what you hold him to be guilty of. If you fail to complete what you have
decided to start (despite the liklihood of it occasioning further distress
for my poor wife) I shall lose all respect for you.
It is, in any case, a moot point at present. I have three further months of
hard campaigning to look forward to before I will be able to progress this
matter personally in any event. Consequently, I would request that you
refrain from aquainting me with your findings until the end of August - I
have enough to distract me from the planning of the Summer Campaign as it
is.
