Mon General,

May I first of all congratulate you on another successful action in command
of the regiment, and thank you for the opportunity to watch your
inspirational tactics from a position as the adjutant. I would hope that as
the campaign progresses, I may learn much about military command from you.

However, I would like to advise you that, God willing, at the conclusion of
the fighting at the front, it is my intention to do my level best to be
appointed to the position of Captain of the King's Escort. I feel that my
dueling skills and small unit tactical knowledge would be put to better use
there, given that the current Captain seems a little slow on the uptake and
does not appear to know anything about politics. This, in my humble
opinion, is not a good thing in a position of such responsibility, as he
will be unable to judge the direction from which any possible threat to His
Majesty may come.

I hope to be able to count on your support come September, but remain

Your Servant

Jean de Lacey
