I believe the difference to be in the tools and the advice from MOTU; you can take a package as run some automated scripts to build a deb from the tar.gz sources but... Barry already has a debian package files so instead of trying to package the source files with an automated tool Matheiu should be running dpkg-buildpackage instead; this would allow you to keep all the debian package stuff the same (and it _should_ be considering the differences are in available libs) I've also heard that 0.11 fails to run properly because there is a difference in version of one of the libs between debian and ubuntu gutsy.
