I agree with this, but at the same time, it is more flexible, and
possibly more elegant, to make releases in the form of a debian source
package, with a tarball, a dsc file, and a diff.gz.  This also means
that users of other distributions don't have to see a debian directory
if they compile from source.  It's easy to add a call to debuild -S to
the release script, you could even add it to the Makefile.am as an
extra target.
