When I was playing around with some wireless stuff, I started up some
sort of KDE app that scanned for wireless access points, which did what
I expected but, there is always a but :), most network related stuff
stopped working. I have a somewhat less than normal setup with multiple
VPN's coming and going, each with their own DNS. It turned out to be
that the KDE app, while starting one of the hundreds of programs KDE
seems to need to do the simplest of tasks, started some sort of DNS
caching thing that screwed up most DNS lookups. Sorry I can't remember
what it was called, but it was something with KDE that screwed things
up.
