Peter,

Curious, this is the 1st time I have seen the 8703e ask for the password
twice. What is the OS version of your BB?

The current CVS/git repositories has a fix for the BB Bold asking for
two passwords that should work. If you could build from one of these
and test that would help. The instructions for downloading/building can
be found at http://www.netdirect.ca/software/packages/barry/index.php.
Don't forget to completely remove all the older versions that you have
installed if your are going to build from the source.

Let us know how it goes!
