It's hard to tell without seeing the errors.  I know if you try doing a 
buildgen.sh cleanall and/or change the configure options, the make 
sometimes fails.  Most of the time starting over by deleting the 
directory and re-downloading will fix it.

Yes, the modem bypasses the BES server and connects directly to your 
provider.  I just VPN back in the same way I do from home. There is a 
package that you can install on your blackberry that will let you use 
you corporate network but I haven't tried it.  I think it is sold by 
Mobishark.  If you try it out let, me know how it works.
