Sounds like a permissions problem with udev/hal/devicekit, I don't have Karmic installed so you may have to do a bit of digging: you should have a group called barry, if your in that group then you should be able to access the blackberry via btool, if you have that group but still can't then check the udev rules in /etc for 99-barry-perms and make sure it's doing the right thing. I know things are changing in Karmic will lots of this infrastructure, best to get kinks out now.
