Oops!  I was unaware that the Ubuntu system had been upgraded to 9.10 (the 
system is not mine)...  apologies, and, actually, i failed to mention that it 
is getting barry tethering to work on the Ubuntu that is the primary goal.  I 
was using two systems only in the hope that that yields more stuff to observe 
and learn from and thus speed up the resolution.

While this was not intended to be an impatient "bump", but, please, someone, 
help! (The Ubuntu owner has thrown around words like "maybe I should switch to 
M#$@@%%% ... " !  :-(
