Sorry, forgot to switch over to Hotmail to send this. Suspect my msn.com
reply got shunted by the list manager.

One thing about system restore. You can ignore all the instructions about
setting a restore point. You want to go back to a previous restore point,
those instructions are at the end of the article. Again, Windows help
should be useful in getting you through this too it can actually launch
the appropriate utilities from the help topic.

Good luck,

It does sound like the problem described here. Looks like it might be
salvageable..

First hit showed this help topic. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822705

The kb article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318159/ seems a bit more
hopeful.

Looks like it might be salvageable. One additional thing to try is to boot
in ³Safe Mode.² To do this you press the F8 key just before you¹d normally
see the windows splash screen (in other words, some text might come on with
your bios info, press and hold F8 at that point until you see a safe mode
boot notice. Boot safe mode without any drivers, no network support. Once
you have the machine booting, assuming that works, I suggest you investigate
the System Restore option (see help on this) as it¹s helped me many times in
similar situations. Instructions should be available in help at that point,
or you can read about it here.

Subject: [Basfa] Request for Technical Assistance

Hi Everyone:

I am in need of technical assistance with my home computer. It shut down
all by itself and keeps cycling through the start up process. It tells me
Windows (XP for Home) did not start successfully, and offers me options for
starting Windows, none of which work The computer displays the Windows
start up screen, then goes black for a few seconds. After that, something
flashes on the screen and the computer restarts. I was able to disable the
auto restart and saw this on the screen:

STOP:  C0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
\systemRoot\System32\config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further
assistance.

So, is this something salvagable, or should I be looking for a new computer?

Thanks!
Dave
