Hi BASFA,
Readercon announced that Frank M. Robinson (1926-2014) is the winner of
the 2018 Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award.

Frank M. Robinson was an excellent writer and lived an interesting life.
He was an early fan and worked at pulp magazine publishers. He built an
amazing collection of pulp magazines, which has been the subject of a
couple of books. He invented what came to be called the "thriller". He
lived in San Francisco and was a speechwriter for Harvey Milk. His novel
"Waiting" features the legendary San Francisco secret society, The
Suicide Club - it is a fun read for anyone interested in the more
unusual aspects of San Francisco history.
Here is a short bio written by Frank M. Robinson himself in his
inimitable style: http://frankmrobinson.com/bio.html
I'm reading his memoir "Not So Good a Gay Man" published posthumously
just last year. I'm up to the point where his acquaintance Hugh Hefner
is starting a magazine.
The Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award was initiated by Smith's
daughters. Its purpose is to recognize and draw attention to other
fantasy or science fiction authors. Frank M. Robinson is a great choice.
If this award leads you to discover his work for the first time, you are
in for a treat.
I am hoping that we can have some sort of book discussion and
celebration at the San Jose Worldcon. It is fantastic that the
Rediscovery Award went to someone with such a strong connection to the
Bay Area and to fandom.
Tom
