Actually, the problem is that until very recently (perhaps a month
or two) Batik wasn't ready to consider doing Smile Animation. The
Batik team focused on getting a _complete_ implementation of the
Static portions of the SVG specification before considering issues of
dynamic SVG.
Now that we have decent support for scripted animation (so we know
our basic framework works) we are trying to gather resources to
implement a Smile animation engine. It's true, I wish we had
everything two years ago but I don't think we really could have gotten
here any faster given the resources available to us.
