You release; I purchase; I complain. The cycle continues! :) Here's my initial set of complaints, ordered roughly by importance.
* Toolbar - I'd like an option to use smaller toolbar icons in order to compress the toolbar vertically. I'm not sure exactly how much bigger it is than the old top bar thing, but it's visually a lot "heavier" in addition to being taller. Smaller toolbar icons would also allow more stuff to be packed into the toolbar, if desired (see later suggestion). * State changed/content modified diamond - Since the toolbar icons are so big, I hide the toolbar. But that means I don't get to see the little diamond that indicates document modification state. Yes, there's the titlebar icon and window close widget "dot" for content modification (but not state modification), but I'm really used to the diamond. It'd be nice if the diamond could (optionally) appear in the navigation bar. * Toolbar / navigation bar / status bar - The redistribution of items among those three areas was thoroughly debated, I'm sure, but the results are not going to make everyone happy (especially given the bigger toolbar). It'd be nice to see more optional redundancy, where the same info/commands/menus can appear in any of the three places, but just appear in one of the places by default. That'd give more flexibility to people like me who want to see some stuff moved around. * Code folding - I'd like a command to "fold current function" which will fold the function that the cursor is in. Balance and Fold just gets the inner-most block. I'm looking for the inner-most *named* block, which is the current function or method in most languages. Actually, it's simpler than that. Just have it fold the current "thingie with a triangle by it in the gutter." (Speaking of which, I don't like to show the gutter and would like an easy way to work with folding even when it's not visible. This command is progress towards that goal.) * Code folding again - A "fold all" command would be nice. * Check Spelling as You Type - It's sloooooow. Turning it on makes text editing responsiveness go way down, to unacceptable levels on a 2x1.8GHz G5. * Save Default Window - I did Lookup in Reference, moved and resized the window, and did Save Default Window. Then I discovered that my normal text windows use that size and position. It'd be nice if windows spawned by Lookup in Reference were considered a separate class of windows (even though they're just text windows). * Lookup in Reference - It'd be nice if the Lookup in Reference windows could pull, parse, and format troff output from the "man" or "perldoc" commands, if only to get bold and underlined text in those windows. (For perldoc, doing something like "perldoc -m Some::Module | pod2html" and then passing that content to a WebKit view in BBEdit might be even better.) * UI "thickness" - I already mentioned the toolbar size. I'd like the gutter and splitter bars to be thinner too. * App icon - The "B" is in the right font now, but the slant is awful. The icon shape (a diamond centered in a rectangle) is inherently perpendicular, and looks bad when slanted, especially at small sizes. That's probably why the 32x32 and smaller sizes are not slanted, but unfortunately the Dock only uses the 128x128 size and scales it down. (No 256x256 or 512x512 sizes? ICNS Browser doesn't show them, anyway.) It's also disappointing that the 16x16 size has no letter "B" in it at all. Finally, the blue is also a bit too saturated. I know, I know, everyone's a critic. But this marks the second (or is it the third?) major release where I will be copying a custom app icon file into the BBEdit bundle every single time I download a new minor release. It's a bummer. * Document icons - I miss the "blue striped"look of the old document icons. It made BBEdit text files stand out a bit more in the sea of "badged white document icons," especially at small sizes. * Status bar - There's a weird double-line on the right side of the line ending pop-up. * Unlimited splitters - Pushed off to BBEdit 9? I still want this feature. * Saved sessions - I'd still like to be able to more easily remember set s of open documents. Something like the SessionManager Firefox extension, or what Saft provides to Safari, etc. -John -- ------------------------------------------------------------------ Have a feature request?
