John,

I appreciate your focus on pixel-perfect attention to detail as
exhibited in many of your blog posts and generally agree with your
critiques about the new icon from a graphic-design point of view.

However, I do appreciate the new icon colors for one reason - BBEdit
is now more obviously different from Mailsmith [1] than it was
before. With so many OS X icons I encounter being predominantly blue
in color, the difference in hues and contrast makes it that much
easier for me to quickly find the BBEdit icon in the application
switcher and in a 20-pixel Dock. (I understand that Mailsmith is not
a mass-market emailer and therefore that this difference will not
have the same impact on all BBEdit users.) It also appears that the
new blue is closer to the Classic BBEdit icon than any previous OS X
BBEdit icon.

It could be that the change in orientation also helps to
differentiate BBEdit from other applications that I do not happen to
use (e.g. the Camino icon is nicely different from the Safari icon
due to its shape and white border).

Although I like to think I prefer attractive visual design, in this
case I'll disagree with you and prefer the functionality of the
current icon.
