Please do report this with a sample file if possible. In large/complex
files, spellchecking may slow things down a bit; can't offer a better
opinion without details. :)
I first noticed it when editing a big Perl module (~4,000 lines)
before I realized the spelling thing was on. I turned it off, but
turned it back on while editing my original post (the one you replied
to) in BBEdit. So there's one sample file: ~60 lines of prose. There
wasn't as much of a slow-down when editing that short file, but it was
noticeable enough that I copied the text into Entourage (my other
go-to for quick, spell-checked text editing) and finished it there.
