It's not what they call it, it's what it does that it didn't do
before, and is that worth $30 to you. If so, great. If not, 8.2
still works great. Personally, I think they should have called it 8.3.

Doubtful. Depends on the feature set and the programmer hours needed
to get to 9.0, I'd guess.
I suppose OS X 10.1 10.2 10.3 10.4 and 10.5 should all be free too as
they are 'just' point release upgrades.
Maybe time to look at some of the free competition out there ...
Sure. Notepad++ on the PC is free and pretty good, and TextWrangler,
of course, is a lot like BBEdit, if you don't need all the special
features. I will say this though, I do a lot of editing of files on
PCs, FreeBSD servers, Linux machines, and other Macs. I use vi or n+
+ most of the time, because most of the time I have minor edits to
make. But if my editing involves more than a few minutes worth of
work, I move the file to my Mac, edit it in BBEdit, and then movie it
back. the time I 'lose' transferring the file is more than made up
for by the reduced level of aggravation and the greater ease in
actually getting my work done.
