I've noticed this, as well. Actually, this has been a problem for me
since around the time of 8.0, but it is worse in 8.5. So far, I only
have 8.5 on my desktop, which is a G4/450 upgraded to a G4/1.4, so I
can't say much about my laptop (which is a 12" G4 and has shown the
problem with earlier versions).
Some factors that seem to play in to various extents:
All 8.x versions:
- Large windows - say, 230 columns by 95 lines
- Syntax coloring on, insertion point inside a string or dual-ended
comment (e.g., /*...*/)
- Editing the beginning or middle portion of a file, especially when
falling into the previous trap
- Saved state??
- ???
8.5 only:
- Inline spell-checking turned on
- ???
As I say, 8.5 is definitely worse. In fact, if I open a new window,
which comes up sized at 132x86, and start typing, it's painfully
slow. Or, even more interesting, don't type anything but just hold
down the return key. For me, it's pretty slow repeating until about
half-way down the window, when it starts to accelerate, and by the
end of the window, it's repeating at full speed. (Of note, I have
BBEdit set to show a half-screen of extra space, and it's when the
scroll bar shows up that the pace really starts to pick up.) But yet,
if I then click onto one of those ending lines and start to type,
it's really slow. In this particular case, turning off the inline
spell checking fixes the problem.
I expect the character I type to appear instantaneously after I hit
the key, particularly as a 90-wpm typist.
The problem definitely worsens with speed, but it becomes a problem
at a relatively lazy pace, probably 20 wpm or less.
Also, saving a file, even a tiny 1KB text file, takes several seconds.
I haven't noticed that problem. For me, saves are virtually
instantaneous.
