It took forever to figure out how the default and expected behaviour of
pressing the Tab key at the beginning of a paragraph in a text file--
actually inserting a tab at that location *just for that line*-- could
actually be gained. 8.5 always wanted to indent every line of the
paragraph. Again, I didn't ask for that. It was 15 minutes of help files
and user manual before I guessed at the right settings. (Memories of
version 7's active, deliberate, irreversible destruction of characters it
claimed did not match the stated encoding.)

Just note that it's not actually inserting a tab for the rest of the lines in that paragraph. It's simply indenting the rest of those lines on-screen.

I find it a very, very useful and valuable feature, almost as good as folding. It let's me leave soft-wrapping turned on and still see the actual structure of my document (based on indentation).

Still, I *can* see how it would be confusing/frustrating if you weren't expecting it. I'd be happy to send you one of my spare minutes, if that would help. Maybe some of the other folks on the list will do the same, and then you can have all 15 of your lost minutes back again! ;-)
