In your preferences (probably in a section called Editor Default)
make sure that 'Auto-expand tabs' is turned off. I'm guessing it is
turned on and it would appear this preference controls the behavior
you are seeing.

Hi,
I'd like to ask you a question about the tabulations.
When I click the tab [->|] key, the cursor (or the text) moves 4
spaces to the right. However, it's not a \t what is inserted, but 4
spaces. If I want the cursor leftwards I need to hit the <- arrow
four times (and not one!) to get to the point where the cursor was
before. See my point?
Is there any way to disable this behaviour? I would like to get a
tab when I hit the tab key and not four spaces.
Thank you for any hint you may give me.
Cheers, Manuel
