It works!

However I only get the indended behaviour (tabs are tabs) in new files. Tabs
in files created before I unchecked the option you mentioned keep producing
4 spaces. Any clues?

In your preferences (probably in a section called Editor Default)
make sure that 'Auto-expand tabs' is turned off. I'm guessing it is
turned on and it would appear this preference controls the behavior
you are seeing.
