Been there and done that. The canned answer seems to be "Why would anyone want to do that?" or "That is a job for a word processor, not a text editor." It's important to point out that tab settings on a once per file basis are a lot different from styles and that constant width columns don't work for the likes of ticker symbol in column one, full 50 character corporate name in column 2, and price in column 3. Extra tab characters can't be inserted because they're not acceptable to software targeted downstream. There was a time when Nisus worked pretty well. The tab settings were contained in the resource fork.
