Anybody found a workaround?
Just use Transmit

For FTP Browsing and use BBEdit as external editor.
In the Transmit preferences set the double click to open the file
in the
external editor. Quick and easy, I work like this all the time.
While I am a big fan of Transmit (as well as BBEdit), using the built
in ftp tool as it existed in prior v8.x releases (with a consistent
interface between the 'Open from FTP Server..' and the 'Save to FTP
Server..') was a simple and very important part of my workflow. Our
comments here are to alert the BBEdit team that they've really
regressed (and only half-way so) on the interface as they try to
'modernize' the look and performance. The Open interface is their
new look, and it has some big plusses -- such as a much longer and
resizable window for displaying files on the remote server. The cons
are (as pointed out earlier) that there is no default to the connect/
disconnect button -- a major annoyance, one can't even tab over to
select it but MUST mouse over to select the Connect button. The 'Save
to ftp...' window remains a dialog box, so its Connect/Disconnect
button is the default and works as expected.
Perhaps that is the standout difference: one is a window and the
latter is a dialog that must be dismissed to continue.
The point of the OP was that these 'feature' changes are
inconsistent, and some do not appear to be fully thought out by the
programming team. Perhaps the programmers don't see the loss of
efficiency when a hand MUST leave the keyboard to move a mouse (or
trackpad) -- but adding up these minor annoyances leads to noticeable
incumberances to using the feature. We don't want a second-app
workaround. We'd like to see what was working well kept at the same
level (or improved, as some of the features in the new 'Open from
FTP...' window offers.
Minor changes that simply require retraining one's muscle memory (the
new Open dialog is a window, so one closes the window instead of
canceling to make it go away) are fine. Having lost functions that
create a whole different way of working with the dialog, or having
flaky connections that aren't time-out issues on the server end --
that's a problem that should be addressed.
