I admit it does sound a bit strange to me. But, as you suggest, maybe it's because I've never tried it. ;-) But maybe an even better solution is to simply use BBEdit's Search -> Compare Against Disk File command before you save your changes. This will highlight *exactly* what has been changed since your last save, right down to the individual characters of each find & replace operation.
