Mike and friends~
I don't know if an inquiry to Bare Bones Software Technical Support,
such as mine in August 2005, qualifies as filing a bug report (it
probably doesn't), but I can tell you this kind of "wandering pointer"
behavior also affects another search-and-replace function in BBEdit:
Educate Quotes. I'm currently using BBEdit version 8.2.6, and that
wandering pointer behavior is still present for Educate Quotes.
Here's what I said to Bare Bones about this on February 03, 2006:
... It distresses me that all versions of BBEdit since 7.1.4 no
longer keep the pointer where the user leaves it while doing
certain functions such as "Educate Quotes" (with no text
highlighted). Under BBEdit 7.1.4 (and earlier versions, too), my
pointer stayed right where I left it when I performed the Educate
Quotes function. Now BBEdit puts my pointer at the end of file
position after I do an Educate Quotes. That's quite user
unfriendly. In fact, why don't you make sure that all your
search-and-replace functions (whether it's Educate Quotes,
Straighten Quotes, Convert to ASCII, or anything similar) don't
"wander" from the user's current position in the file? Even
Microsoft Word -- which is a dreadful but unavoidable word
processor, IMO -- keeps the pointer where it should be: right
where the user left it before doing any kind of
search-and-replace function.
So once upon a time the pointer in a BBEdit document's did stay where
it was before and after Educate Quotes was executed, which is the more
desirable behavior, IMO.

wrote to me in a similar exchange of emails on the subject:
