Absurd? Absolutely. That's why I followed it with a smiley. :-) (1) I don't think it makes any difference whether you click a line number or the left margin; the behavior is the same. (2) As has been mentioned before, there's a preference setting at "Editing: General -> Allow single-click line selection" that allows you to select an entire line by single-clicking the line number or left margin. I don't know when the "Allow single-click line selection" preference was added, but I've been doing things this way for a decade or so (since about BBEdit 6). If you don't have this preference enabled, you can temporarily enable the same behavior by holding down the Option key while you hover the mouse cursor over the line number or left margin. Just as when the preference is enabled, the mouse cursor turns into a right-pointing arrow and you can select the entire line with a single-click. Presumably, this is what Mark is doing. (3) Although Bruce Van Allen is apparently seeing different behavior, in my BBEdit 9.1.1 (2328) set up, the Option-double-clicking and Option-triple-clicking in the main document area (i.e. not on the line numbers or in the left margin) has the same effect as the "Search -> Find Selected Text" command. For example, double-clicking a word selects that word. So Option- double-clicking on a word finds and highlights the next matching occurrence of that word. Repeat Option-double-click on that new occurrence and it finds the next occurrence, and so on. The same goes for triple-clicking, but it works on lines instead of words. (4) My theory is that the behavior Mark is seeing is a conflict between the searching feature described in #3 and the disabled preference setting described in #2. In Mark's configuration, single-click line selection only occurs when he holds the Option key while clicking a line number or left margin. But this also triggers the "search for next occurrence" feature. The result: unexpected and confusing behavior. I'm not seeing this problem in my configuration because I've got the "Allow single-click line selection" preference enabled. So I don't need to hold down the Option key to get single-click line selection; my mouse cursor automatically points to the right when I hover over the left margin. So for me, holding the Option key only triggers the "find matching line" functionality. Hence, I suggested to simply not hold down the Option key. So Mark, if my theory is correct, I think the work-around is to enable the "Allow single-click line selection" preference for now so you don't have to hold the Option key and don't run into the conflict with the "find matching line" functionality. Then hope that Bare Bones resolves the feature conflict in a future release so you can turn that preference off again if you don't want to use it. > Actually, there are several > things that have changed with v.9.x that are extremely annoying, and I > may just be looking for a new text editor if there aren't ways to > regress the ne "Options" to their previous states. I guess that's one of the trade-offs for a mature app. On one hand, I'm sure Bare Bones wants to modernize BBEdit to keep it competitive with the slick, new generation of text editors like TextMate. On the other hand, they want to keep their long-time customers satisfied by keeping things as familiar and comfortable as possible. I'm sure it's a difficult balancing act. What things, specifically, do you find so annoying in BBEdit 9 and why? -Dennis --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "BBEdit Talk" group.
