Great, thanks! The first four are (part of) what I'm looking for, and
I assume I can remap them to the regular keys if I want. It's very
unfortunate that scroll up/down doesn't keep the insertion point
intact (or have an alternative), as I use that all the time.

To others who mentioned something along the lines, this really isn't
Windows vs Mac behavior (if I hadn't said I was a switcher I doubt it
would have come up :) ). There are Windows editors that *allow* this
behavior, though I can't think of any where it's the default. (I know
there are some, because I've encountered them in testing over the
years, but it always threw me, just as it did here.)

It's purely a behavioral thing — some people always want their
insertion point on-screen, some people don't. I can't for the life of
me understand the latter (it violates "least surprise" in a variety of
ways, IMO), and they can't for the life of them understand the
former. :) Which is why I think (and will now suggest officially via
other means) it should be an *option*.

Nor do I see that this violates anything in the HIG; the quoted
section above says nothing about the insertion point, merely about the
behavior of the PageUp/Down keys, which I am not asking to be any
different than they are right now.

I do (now) see the keys above listed in the manual, but I don't see
any indication in the manual that the behavior is different than
regular PageUp/Down, e.g., or that the insertion point is involved,
etc. So I hope I can be forgiven for not figuring that out on my
own. :)

Again, thanks to everyone that responded, I appreciate your taking the
time to help a newbie!
