I'm getting the same problem. I can regain my icons by reinstalling an older version (9.6.3) to my hard drive along with 10, but there's clearly something wrong.
I'm wondering how many above who are having this problem have also upgraded to the Mac OSX 10.6.8 supplemental update? I've upgraded two pieces of software since making this update, and both of them have produced generic document icons. It may be that it's an Apple problem with some change in the way they are registering new applications.
