I just solved the problem fairly simply -- by reinstalling BBE 9.6.3, using the name "BBEdit 9.6.3" to avoid confusion. BBE 10 still starts and operates on all suitable files, while I have the correct icons back, and more importantly I have the file sort order back in Finder windows.
