I've always found that it is best to pick the tool that does the job you need it to do rather than alter the tool to do the job. That's why I have six image editors (of which I often use only two), one text editor (guess), one spreadsheet editor, and a few word processors.
I rarely use the word processor--despite it's huge list of "features"--because of its unwieldy nature and propensity to really mess things up. On the surface it may look pretty, but what happens beneath is a seething cesspool.
