I get the following error when I check for updates in BBEdit "Software
Update Check Failed: An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to
the server cannot be made."

The servers and services are working normally, but in the past we've seen situations in which proxies and gateways cache old certificates or otherwise interfere with secure connections to Software Update.

In that case, the easiest thing to do is to download and install the update manually: <http://www.barebones.com/support/bbedit/updates.html>.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they sedate me.
