How do other BBEdit users deal with errors in case references? Is there a BBEdit function I don’t know about? Must I depend on my increasingly feeble brain to remember this when I make this error?

I switched to case-sensitive filesystem many years for reasons exactly like this one. Switching to case-sensitive filesystem is a one-time operation; dealing with "bugs" due to case-insensitive filesystem is an ongoing (possibly time-costly) problem.

Some people argue against switching to case-sensitive for boot volume (although I'm not sure why), in which case create a second volume formatted case-sensitive and use that for dev work.

In any case, best solution to your dilemma is to not use case-insensitive filesystem. Or be prepared to sink more hours into debugging issues caused by it.
